Offshore Wind Power

Early this month the Deepwater Wind project was fully permitted. The Deepwater Wind project will be the United States first offshore wind farm, and construction is planned to begin in this upcoming summer in 2015. There are only twenty-five in existence to-date, twenty-two of which are in Europe. The three non-European farms are located in Chinese waters. Denmark's Vindeby, was the first offshore windfarm, built in 1991. The United Kingdom leads the world in offshore wind power in the most power generated (38.4 million MW), number of turbines (just under 2,000),and number of farms (19). The US's leading energy consumer Texas, consumes about 3.6 Billion MW annually and New York consumes about 1 Billion MW annually. One year of energy generated by the UK's offshore wind farms alone could power New York City for approximately 8 months of the year.
